A Word For Your Week: Why is it easier to give than to receive?

For out of His fullness (abundance) we have all received [all had a share and we were all supplied with] one grace after another and spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped] upon gift.” John 1:12

My amazing mother-in-law is recovering from surgery. She is completely dependent on others at the moment.  Truthfully, I think this is harder on her than the surgery was—being helpless and vulnerable is both challenging and uncomfortable! It is for most of us.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this at one time or another. As leaders we prefer to be the ones giving, not receiving; helping, not needing help; directing, not needing direction. True humility requires that we learn to receive from others, be willing to ask for help and counsel, and open our hearts to encouragement from others.

How can you be better at receiving? Why do you think it’s a challenge for you?
